Fountaindale School for the Arts and Academic Excellence will continue to be a part of the statewide initiative called Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). This program is meant to reinforce the positive behaviors of students doing what is expected of them, while motivating students who need extra support to reach the school-wide expectations of demonstrating respect and responsibility in all areas.
This PBIS program is used in conjunction with a school-wide behavior management system in every classroom. All classrooms use a colored card system as a way to help students monitor their behavior. The order of the cards goes as follows: gold, green, yellow, orange and red. All students begin each day on a green card, and can have a card turned for behavior infractions. If a card has been turned, the student may have the chance to have their card turned back up if the teacher determines he/she has demonstrated positive behavior for an extended period of time. We will continue to use the golden ticket (gold card) for those rare occasions when a student truly goes “above and beyond.” A more detailed explanation of the card colors and consequences for behaviors is attached to this letter.
Students have the opportunity to earn “bird bucks” for demonstrating respectful and responsible behavior in encore classes, for substitute teachers or on the school bus. The students may then use these bird bucks to enter a weekly grade level raffle, participate in special activities provided by some encore teachers, or save them to buy items from the school store showcase during each teacher’s bi-monthly assigned time (the school store is open every Tuesday from 7:15-7:35 a.m. for any student to purchase items using REAL MONEY, NOT BIRD BUCKS). Each month, all students will also have the opportunity to participate in a monthly fun activity if they have earned green cards for 85% of that month.
PBIS is truly a win-win program for all involved. Our hope is that you will become as supportive and enthusiastic about this program as we have become! We hope this gives you a quick glimpse into one of the many programs that will continue to encourage Fountaindale students to be the best that they can be!
